Elaine Baker to Receive Visionary Award

Baker Sponder Gallery and Art Boca Raton announce that Elaine Baker will be presented with the Visionary Award on March 17, 2016 during the fair’s Vernissage from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. that benefits the Boca Raton Museum of Art & Art School. Past recipients of the Visionary Award presented include: Arman, Jun Kaneko, Roberto Matta, Nam June Paik, Pilchuck Glass School, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Lino Tagliapietra, and Tom Wesselmann.

“We honor artists and art professionals who demonstrate significant accomplishments in their field, pioneering new ideas, art forms, and community-wide programs that foster cultural awareness,” says Lee Ann Lester, co-founder/organizer Art Boca Raton. “Elaine has been a vibrant presence in the Florida art world and internationally for more than five decades her vision and dedication is an example to all,” continues Lester.

Originally from Boston, Elaine Baker began her career in 1974 as Director of the Ann Jaffe Gallery in Bal Harbour, Florida. In 1989, she moved to Boca Raton with her husband, Irving, and opened her first gallery at the Gallery Center joining Habatat Gallery and Camino Real. In 2003, her daughter, Deborah Sponder (who moved to Boca Raton after 15 years as an art dealer in California), joined her as partner and the business was renamed Baker Sponder Gallery.
Deeply committed to the community, Elaine supports and hosts events for Boca Raton Regional Hospital, the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, the Unicorn Children’s Foundation and the Congressional Art Competition, among others. As a long-time supporter of the Boca Raton Museum of Art, Baker encourages her clients to become involved with the museum and has been instrumental in facilitating significant donations to the museum’s permanent collection.
Elaine Baker has nurtured the careers of many prominent artists, giving some their first solo exhibits in Boca Raton including Donald Sultan, Frank Stella, Alex Katz, Alexander Liberman, Friedel Dzubas, Lynn Chadwick and Dan Christensen. The gallery also curates site-specific works and provides educational and cultural enhancements to the Boca Raton Resort and Club and the Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne.
