Elaine Baker Gallery
is pleased to announce the exhibition of celebrated artist and mathematician M.C. Escher. The over 100 woodcuts, lithographs, linocuts and watercolors will encompass the world’s largest gallery collection. These rare works are an undeniable stroke of genius, and a must see for art enthusiasts!

The Dutch artist Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) was a draftsman, book illustrator, tapestry designer, muralist, and master printmaker. Born in Leeuwarden, Holland, the son of a civil engineer, Escher spent most of his childhood in Arnhem. Aspiring to be an architect, Escher enrolled in the School for Architecture and Decorative Arts in Haarlem. While studying there from 1919 to 1922, his emphasis shifted from architecture to drawing and printmaking upon the encouragement of his teacher Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita.

Escher’s later career centered on lithographs and woodcuts; though his few mezzotints are considered the masterpieces of this technique. Through his graphic art, Escher portrayed mathematical relationships among shapes, figures and space exploring interlocked black and white shapes to enhance different dimensions.

Escher understanding of mathematics was largely visual and intuitive. The works have a strong scientific component, and more than a few of the worlds which he drew are built around seemingly impossible objects.

For the past two decades Elaine Baker Gallery has been synonymous with modern and contemporary art, and has come to be a respected resource for collectors, museums, architects, designers and corporations nationwide. The gallery offers works by established and mid-career international artists, while maintaining an inventory of strong secondary market work. The gallery has mounted over 150 important exhibitions, displaying paintings, sculpture, photography and major works on paper.

We are opening a new gallery and sculpture project at the prestigious Boca Raton Resort.  This will be in addition to our space at the Gallery Center where we have just celebrated our 20th year. More information to be announced.
