The work of Valentin van der MEULEN originates from a reflection about images, their reading and their link with reality. 

The artist's process begins with images from print media, the internet, and his private sphere which are then translated into large drawings on a black background. In a subsequent step, these drawings are partially or totally erased. The resulting works lose their original context and subject due to van der MEULEN's intense cropping, contrast and manipulation.

The artist intends to give each image a new temporality, at once imperceptible and revealed. By placing the spectator between what was and what remains, van der MEULEN evokes notions of absence, disappearance, and memory as the basis of his work.
