BIOGRAPHY
Kikuo Saito’s rich constellations of gestural works offer deliberate evidence of the artist’s hand. While Saito’s sensitivity to the qualities of paint make it clear that his marks exist on the canvas surface, space in these works is often indefinite. Shifts in density, scale, tone, and intensity of strokes suggest that each gesture occupies an individual position. Saito’s additional body of work includes images conceived as screens. The literal two-dimensional surface of each canvas is asserted by rows of elegant, freely drawn Roman letters arranged by a vanished grid.
